Screen cap of a Facebook post, reading:

Something ironic that I’ve noticed from being in both autistic mom groups and NT mom groups. Let’s pretend a child cries every time they have to be buckled in the car seat..

NT mom group: “tell them to deal with it, it’s for their safety” “ignore the outbursts, they’ll get used to it” “maybe the straps are too tight? If not, and nothing seems to be wrong with the seat, let them cry it out, safety is most important.” “Sometimes, you just gotta deal with it, hugs mama, sorry this is happening.”

Autistic mom group: “is your child verbal enough to express or show why they’re in distress?” “is the fabric of the car seat scratchy?” “Are the windows tinted? If not the sun may hurt.” “Maybe he wants someone to hold his hand, can you reach back and hold it maybe? anxiety is a real bitch” “transitions can be hard, especially on little humans, maybe give advance notice that you will be leaving in the car at x time?” “Obviously something has him distressed, does he have a toy he’s attached too and can hold?”

And they say autistics do not experience empathy.

autismserenity

This is extremely fucking true. Our friends are always marveling at how attentive we are to what our toddler is trying to communicate. I’m like… that’s… how you communicate with someone who you don’t share enough language with… that’s how you communicate with someone who’s ~~“”“"nonverbal”“”“”“~~~

the intersection of ageism and ableism is awful, and it really shows up squared in the way that abled adults just assume that there’s no way to communicate with neurodiverse kids. and babies, tbh, who they think of in a similar way.

explorerrowan

It takes so little work to treat people like people, but so few are willing to bother.

cllynchauthor

And then the neurotypical enters the room:

screenshot of a comment saying "its better for kids to cry for a little bit than to hit the windshield in a car crash."

No one is advocating for babies to be unbuckled.

Autistic people are just way more aware of how many solvable problems could be involved, and as people who live continually with discomfort we care a lot about minimizing it whenever possible.

I HAVE LITERALLY NEVER SEEN AMERICA THIS UNITED BEHIND A CAUSE THE AMOUNT OF SUPPORT FOR THE PROTESTORS AND DISTAIN FOR THE POLICE IS STAGGERING

EVEN IF THE FLAMES DIE DOWN AND THE COPS FORCE PEOPLE BACK INTO THEIR HOMES UNDERSTAND THAT IN THEIR DESPERATE EFFORT TO CLING TO THEIR POWER THEY HAVE ONLY SUCCEEDED IN RADICALIZING AN ENTIRE GENERATION OF AMERICANS AGAINST THEM

normal-horoscopes

WITH THEIR ACTIONS DURING THESE PROTESTS THE POLICE HAVE SINGLE-HANDEDLY DESTROYED ANY REMAINING TRUST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAD IN THEM

THE ILLUSION IS SHATTERED

ALL THE SOCIAL POINTS THEY GAINED IN THE WAKE OF 9/11 HAVE BEEN SPENT AND AMERICANS NOW SEE THEM FOR THE BASTARDS THE ALWAYS HAVE BEEN

normal-horoscopes

THERE ARE KARENS ARE SAYING ACAB NOW THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR THE AMERICAN POLICE SYSTEM AS WE KNOW IT

normal-horoscopes

THE MEDIA NARRATIVE IS TURNING RAPIDLY MORE IN FAVOR OF THE RIOTERS

COPS ARE VISIBLY LOSING BRAVADO

WE ARE WINNING

normal-horoscopes

DAMN NEAR ALL PRO-COP PROPAGANDA IS BEING DROWNED IN MOCKERY AND SUPPORT FOR BLACK AMERICANS

THE NARRATIVE IS NOW FIRMLY IN OUR CONTROL

THE SHEER NUMBERS OF THE PROTESTS ARE BEGINNING TO DECLINE BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN HAS THEIR EYES AND EARS FIXED ON GOVERNEMNT OFFICIALS

THE BALL IS IN THEIR COURT AND IT IS ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT IF THEY FAIL TO SERVE JUSTICE THEIR CITIES WILL BURN

THE DAY IS OURS AND WE ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE

hater-of-terfs

54% of Americans believe burning the Minneapolis police precinct building was justified

Not just that police brutality is an issue. Not just that protesting it is warranted. Not just a general agreement with BLM’s goals. A majority of Americans believe that capturing and burning down a police precinct building was a justified action

The narrative has permanently shifted. We are definitely winning

....so it’s okay for cops to do this??

and y’all WONDER why people are rioting. because it’s “ok” for officers to do this. they were pretty peaceful until the police acted maliciously. they were throwing some things (at cars, the cops weren’t in danger), but does that give officers the right to run them over? the answer should be NO. if your answer was yes, your values are pathetic. you are exactly what is wrong with this country. it is saddening how blind, complacent, and manipulated you are.

The neurodiversity movement should be inclusive. By definition we should welcome diversity. When white autistic people put themselves against autistic people of colour, we engage in the same power dynamic that NTs use against us.

ND people are disabled in so many ways by living in a society built for and by NTs. Black people suffer also from living in a society built for and by white people. Black autistic people need the support of fellow NDs to help them stand up against this double whammy.

the-spud-player asked:

What's different to you between UK and Canada?

quasi-normalcy answered:

That’s a very broad question. I suppose that I’ll start with the obvious: Canada is bigger, colder, and has newer buildings. You can get just about anywhere in the UK within a day, by train, which was an exciting novelty for me that never really wore off. The was food is more flavourful in Canada. In my particular city in Scotland, at least, I found the people to be so friendly that they made Canadians look like Americans by comparison, but I doubt that that’s true of Britain in general.

Since I think that you are asking this in the context of my post about how the two countries are fucked up, I think that it boils down to this: the UK has never gotten used to the fact that it’s not an empire anymore; Canada, by contrast, has never gotten used to that it’s not a colony anymore. Britain is essentially a middle-power that still has the instincts of a global hegemon, and so it blunders around the world hurting itself and everyone else in stupid, pointless imperial ventures whilst much of its population suffers some of the worst poverty in the western Europe. Enough of its average, every-day people remember being able to look at huge swaths of pink on the world map that this still seems a reasonable trade-off for them in election after election.

In Canada, on the other hand, the entire political class–in government, in think tanks, and in the media–seem wholly committed to the idea that the country is, or should be, the world’s largest gas station. Our job is to sell oil to more important countries, and anyone who hinders this noble mission–dissenting First Nations groups, primarily, but also environmentalists, radicals, etc.–is an obstacle to be removed. This mentality, as I have said, is colonial, and the vision is therefore myopic. Much of the population literally see their own country as if it really were just an idyllic postcard picture of ice hockey, maple syrup, and free healthcare. And this lack of vision infects even dissenters here; there is little appetite, even on the left, for sweeping reforms or even radical analysis. In fact, if I were being cynical, I might even say that Canada doesn’t really have a left in the sense that Britain does, just a loose patchwork of single-issue groups with little effort to develop a theory to tie them together. How could it be otherwise? Such a theory would require an attitude other than one of passive contentment, and when you live in a postcard, that’s one thing you can’t have.

In short, Britain sees a whole bunch of soaring glories that don’t really exist and can never be attained; Canada cannot see anything past the tip of its own nose.

Apparently vultures are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so there is nothing ICE can do about this except politely try to shoo the birds away.
